Janis Porter is a Mendocino artist who was born, raised and educated in Berkeley, California. She studied History and Education at the University of California at Berkeley and worked as a teacher in public schools and as a University Supervisor teaching intern teachers.
After a lifetime of interest in art, she began painting watercolors in 1998. She has studied with some noted artists, including Betty Saarni, Nancy Collins, and Patricia Osborne. She moved to beautiful Mendocino, California in 2001.
She has shown her work at California Watercolor Association shows, winning several awards. In the Bay Area, her work was shown at Blackhawk Gallery in Danville and at Hammons Gallery in Kensington. Currently her work may be seen at Edgewater Gallery, the Artists Co-op of Mendocino, Prentice Gallery, the Mendocino Art Center, and at Stevenswood Lodge- all in the Mendocino-Fort Bragg area.
She is also the Exhibition Chairperson at the Mendocino Art Center. Her paintings have been selected to advertise a number of local events such as the 2003 Mendocino Rotary Raffle, the 2004 Mendocino Art Center Garden Tour, the 2005 Kelley House “Art from the Heart” art auction, and the 2005 Mendocino Music Festival.
