JIM VICKERY

Two Pelicans by Jim Vickery

 "Two Pelicans"

Jim Vickery was born in Hawaii but traveled the U.S. as a member of a Navy family. They settled in the San Francisco Bay Area when he was in his teens and he went on to graduate from California College of Arts and Crafts.

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, he devoured comic books, Mad magazine and horror movies. During college, his influence widened to include not just Don Martin but Salvador Dali, M. C. Escher and Vermeer.

Over the years he has done political cartoons for the Sierra Club, and the Communications Workers of America’s newsletter. He has been a member of The Hayward Arts Council and now is a member of Artist’s Co-op of Mendocino, North Coast Artist’s Guild, Artist’s Collective at Elk and the Gualala Arts Center. He has shown at the San Francisco Art Festival, The Sun Gallery in Hayward, Prentice Gallery in Ft. Bragg, St. Anthony’s Hall in Mendocino, City Arts in Pt. Arena, Art in the Redwoods and ”Wet Paint The Best of 2006” both in Gualala, where his painting “Distraction” won 2nd place.

His art has taken many directions, but he has tried to stay true to his roots of political and social commentary. However since moving to the Mendocino Coast, 18 months ago, he has found it impossible to live in this beautiful place without trying to say something about that artistically as well.
